[ the feed clicks on silently; while there is little fuss in the way of background noise, it takes a few moments before the static and blur subsides. a pale finger rubs a smudge of dust away from the corner of the screen, as an equally pale face comes into focus.

there is something withdrawn, yet somehow feral about her. the subtle vibrations of a caged animal, newly freed, but mistrustful of its new surroundings.

there are bruises in the shape of a collar around her neck, only briefly visible before she pulls her hair over her shoulders. ]

I see several of you have arrived on this dilapidated vessel with acquaintances from home. Perhaps more than not, [ she observes in carefully clipped English, although it is perhaps evident that it is not her first language from the certain tilt of her tongue. ] Was there a mechanism that permitted this?

I would be willing to trade information for skills.

[ a pause. ]

Clearing debris should be little problem for me, for example.

[ there's a lot to unfold here.]

Are you... okay?

[ wanda blinks once, purposefully, posture slowly straightening. she's certain she looks as haggard as she feels... but she wonders exactly how much caroline saw. she aligns her features carefully, emotion-free. ]

A little topsy turvy, like the rest of you, I would imagine. I'll admit I had a... rough launch, before arrival.

[coy]

None of this was easy, true. [ pause.] Are you sure you want to be clearing debris...

[hext]

[ wanda, too, pauses before the edges of her lips curve up faintly. it's almost a smile. she zooms her lens out, and permits caroline to watch her orchestrate a heap of junk from one corner of the little room she's in, to another, with a small direction of her hand through the air. her palm and fingers emit a dark red glow that flickers away once the task is done. ]

It is no trouble, you see.

[ caroline suddenly looks thrilled.] Are you a witch?

[hext]

[ wanda finds caroline's reaction... quite puzzling. but there's a current of relief undulating beneath that. ]

...In a manner of speaking. The technical term is metahuman.

[coy]

Metahuman? I've never heard... what does that mean?

[hext]

[ here, wanda really does smile. quietly, but truly. caroline's tone lacks anything of suspicion or guile. she finds she likes her almost immediately. ]

It denotes abilities that are less to do with superstition and mythical "witchcraft," and more to do with what has generally been achieved through genetic enhancement.

[coy]

Oh. [ her excitement deflates a little.] That's.... well, I wonder... My best friend is a witch. I didn't think... well metahumans aren't a thing where I'm from as far as I know but maybe that's just another name for what she was.

[hext]

Possibly.

[ wanda notices caroline's lowered enthusiasm, and adds, gently, ]

They call me a witch at home, at any rate. The Scarlet Witch.

[ she offers a gentle smile back.] Is that some kind of superhero name?
